I found what I thought was a very early 1948 Sweet Sixteen based on the serial number. Other factors need to be taken into consideration to properly date your gun. I took the liberty to use the Calandar Year Jan. Details about dates, transitions, exceptions, and other nuances can be found in the Shirley/Vanderlinden book, Browning Auto 5 Shotguns. These dates were gleaned primarily from Sauerfan's timeline and the Shirley/Vanderlinden book.

The serial number and dates are approximations only. I decided to share it here since this is where much of my limited knowledge came from. I compiled this quick reference serial number guide for dating 16ga Browning A5s and the Auto 5-3 Shot, by serial number. A common mistake I have seen in many, many, gun shops and online sites is to assign the 12ga serial number date to a 16ga. Browning 12ga numbers began with number 1 in 1903. But the Browning's forestock finish is about 80% or so.This guide is for the Browning A5 16 gauge only. Oh, and both of the guns are in exceptional condition. Either way, it wouldn't matter, as they will be in the family for time to come. They might not be worth much to anyone else though. So they have been around for "quite some time" compared to me!! As I was born in '81 heheĭoes anyone know where I can look this Marlin up at? I'm interested in finding out the history of both of these models and about how many were produced, and about what they are worth. Both of these guns were owned by his father, who passed away in '78 I believe. But so far, this is turning out to be one of my favorite guns that my stepfather owns, and is being handed down to me. I'm also in possesion of a Marlin 30-30 lever action carbine. I haven't looked it up on the browning site yet, but that is my next move. It also has a circle with FN in the center of it, just before the serial number. I was going to redo the stocks on it, but from everything that I have been told, it would be better to just leave it, as they are not in bad condition. I'm just curious as to what all these other markings mean.
However, I can't find what all these other markings mean. I did find the choke markings guide, to find out what choke it has.
I know you can "age" your gun from the serial number on their site, not sure about the other markings. What else is there on it? You might look on Browning's website and see if they post all those markings. You might see *- which indicates Imp Modified (tight Mod) but probably not on a 16. IIRC, that is for full, modified or IC choke. You might have to remove the fore end to see it. On the barrel, left side I think, just forward of the chamber and above the fore end you'll probably see some marks. What kind of shape is it in? Many of the markings will be proof marks which mean little to us except that it passed the test. So is there something similar for Brownings? I know they have sites where you can find out what all the markings on an SKS mean. But I would still like to find a website or something that tells me what all of those markings mean. Ok, I've found out that it is a Browning A-5 (Auto-5) shotgun in 16 gauge.
